In view of my present role, I should perhaps champion James Clerk Maxwell instead of Einstein. He was for a time a Professor of Natural Philosophy at Marischal College, Aberdeen. The embarrassment is that we fired one of Britain’s greatest scientists. Until 1860 Aberdeen consisted of two Colleges, King’s and Marischal. When they merged to form the new University I now lead, it had two professors of physics. Maxwell was at the newer College, Marischal. Even though he was married to the daughter of its Principal, he was the one they let go at the merger.
