Mr. Trollope entrusts all this to the individuals of his story. Later in Trollope's career younger writers were not often to pay him such worthwhile compliments: and Meredith's champions, James Thomson and W. E. Henley, were less magnanimous than their master. Trollope was not yet fully established, however. In his book on Novels and Novelists from Elizabeth to Victoria, published in I858, John Cordy Jeaffreson could still devote a mere thirteen lines to Trollope:21 that is one-third of the number he gave Charlotte Yonge, for example, and put Trollope on a level with very minor figures like Samuel Lover and Dudley Costello.
